COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (blugolds.com) — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team saw its upset bid come up just short in a 71-70 loss to No. 25 St. John's (Minn.) in double overtime on Saturday. The Blugolds built a five-point lead in the second overtime period, but couldn't quite hold off the nationally ranked Johnnies on the road.

The Blugolds trailed by one in the closing moments of the first overtime period, but Carter Huschka (Jr. - Farmington, Minn.) made a free throw to tie the game and force a second overtime. Brock Voigt (Sr. - Sun Prairie, Wis.) went on a personal 5-0 run to open the second extra period, putting UW-Eau Claire ahead 68-63. However, the Johnnies scored eight of the game's final 10 points to escape with a victory.

The Blugolds led by as much as 10 in the first half — featuring a 10-0 run to open the game — but needed a rally late in regulation to force overtime. St. John's went ahead on a layup with 1:11 remaining, but Voigt made a layup of his own with 38 seconds left to tie the game. Neither team scored before the buzzer, sending the game to an extra period.

The first overtime featured only four points, two by each team. The Blugolds scored on free throws from Huschka and Carter Hanke (Sr. - Marathon, Wis.), while the Johnnies hit a jumper. Voigt made a layup and a 3-pointer to start double overtime, but St. John's countered with a jump shot of their own and back-to-back 3-pointers to take the lead for good. UW-Eau Claire had a couple of chances at a buzzer beater, but couldn't connect.

Voigt scored a game-high 30 points and added nine rebounds and four blocks for the Blugolds. Michael Casper (Jr. - Merrill, Wis.) added 13 points and four rebounds. Hanke finished with eight points, and Huscka tallied seven points and seven rebounds.

UW-Eau Claire returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 16, when it visits St. Olaf. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
