ST. PETER, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's tennis team was back on the road on Sunday for two nonconference matches against Gustavus Adolphus College and Luther College. Despite falling in the first contest 6-3, the Blugolds bounced back with a 7-2 victory over Luther for a weekend split.
In the first matchup against the Gustavus Gusties, Clare Palen (So. – Rochester, MN/Lourdes) and Samantha Fuchs (Fr. – De Forest, WI) were the only doubles pairing to come away with team points after a hard-fought battle at no. 2 doubles for an 8-7 win.
Fuchs continued her winning ways at no. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over S. Douglas (GAC). Sydney Presler (Jr. – Eau Claire, WI/Altoona) was the other Blugold to earn a team point with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 tiebreaker win over R. Lindrud (GAC) at no. 6 singles. UW-Eau Claire fell to Gustavus, 6-3.
In the second contest of the day, Eau Claire bounced back big for the team's second win of the spring season. Elaine Franta (Jr. – White Bear Lake, MN) and Lindsey Henderson (Sr. – Prior Lake, MN) started things off with an 8-1 win at no. 1 doubles. The Blugolds swept the doubles matches against the Norse as Palen and Fuchs won at no. 2 doubles and Morgan Dekan (Fr. – Altoona, WI) and Morgan Nelson (So. – Beaver Dam, WI) were victorious at no. 3 doubles. Henderson, Franta, Fuchs, and Nelson all took home wins in their respective singles matches to push UWEC to a 7-2 win.
The Blugolds will take this week off and prepare for a team spring break trip down to Florida where they will compete in three nonconference matches. The first contest is scheduled against Eckerd College on Monday, March 21st at 10:30AM.
