Two Blugolds Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Two UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Receiving honors this week were softball player Taylor Pierce (Fr.-Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) and gymnast Danielle Schulzetenberg (Jr.-Maple Grove, Minn.).

Pierce started her collegiate career in a big way, providing the game-winning hits in both games against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Feb. 25. In game one, she hit a three-run triple in the bottom of the eighth to give the Blugolds a season-opening 6-5 win. In game two, her seventh inning solo home run held up for the final margin (5-4), as the Blugolds opened 2012 with a sweep over the Gusties.

Schulzetenberg won three events and took first in the all-around competition as the Blugolds defeated UW-Oshkosh 183.000-178.575. She recorded season-best marks in the all-around, floor exercise, uneven bars and balance beam. Schulzetenberg was first in the all-around with a score of 36.750 and had a 9.600 in the floor exercise. On the balance beam, she recorded a 9.575 and finished with a 9.325 on the vault. She also had a season-high 8.250 on the uneven bars as she took ninth place.
