Men's Tennis Goes 2-1 in Oshkosh Facing In-State Opponents

OSHKOSH, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team went 2-1 this weekend taking on three UW schools at the Kolf Sports Center Complex in Oshkosh.

Friday, the Blugolds narrowly edged UW-La Crosse, winning 5-4. Saturday, Eau Claire opened with a 9-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh but fell 6-3 later in the day to UW-Whitewater.

While a number of the matches were closely contested, Joe Meier (So.-Hutchinson, Minn.) and Michael Roden (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) were the lone Blugolds to go 3-0 in singles play for the weekend.

At No. 5, Meier opened with a 6-4, 6-3 win against CJ Schwind from La Crosse and then defeated Oshkosh's Jason Alexander 6-2, 6-2 Saturday morning. Meier then beat Whitewater's Erik Scanlan 7-6, 3-6, 10-7 to finish the weekend.

In the No. 6 spot, Roden started the weekend with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Matt Bulger from La Crosse and followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Oshkosh's Adam Kasper on Saturday. Facing Whitewater's Brady Porter, he finished the weekend with a 7-6, 6-2, 10-3 win.

Florent Marco (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) and Joey Minear (Fr.-Oronoco, Minn./Rochester Century) went 2-1 while Chris Kuna (Sr.-Edina, Minn.) and Ryan Vande Linde (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) both won once.

In doubles play, the Blugolds won all three matches against UW-Oshkosh but won just one out of three against both La Crosse and Whitewater.

The Blugolds are now 18-8 on the season.

Eau Claire will now wait to find out if they are selected to compete in the 2012 NCAA Championships. The selection announcement will be made May 7.
