Blugold Pioneer Sandy Schumacher Passes Away

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – UW-Eau Claire women’s athletics pioneer Sandy Schumacher passed away Tuesday (November 27) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  She was 76.

Schumacher retired from UW-Eau Claire in 1994 after a teaching and coaching career that began at Eau Claire in 1968. She was the first Blugold women’s basketball coach, directing the program from 1969-87. She was also the school’s first volleyball coach from 1970-75 and conducted the first volleyball camps for girls at Eau Claire. Schumacher coached women’s softball when it was a club sport from 1980-84 and produced five winning seasons before it became a varsity sport in 1985. She served as varsity coach for one season in 1993-94. She was also instrumental in organizing synchronized swimming and field hockey for women at UW-Eau Claire.

Schumacher was inducted into the Blugold Hall of Fame on October 15, 1995.
