EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team hosted their final regular season dual of the 2021-22 season on Friday. As the Blugolds faced off with Saint John's University (Minn.) during senior night, UWEC tallied their second shutout of the year with a dominant 54-0 victory.
With three forfeit victories to begin the evening, Jake Drexler (Sr. – Stratford, WI) kept the momentum going with an 8-4 decision victory over Logan Thorsten (SJU). Adam Rients (Jr. – Waterville, MN/WEM) and Chase Schmidt (Sr. – Rice Lake, WI) followed up the key win at 149 with pins at 157 and 165, respectively.
Jared Stricker (Fr. – Ashland, WI) was victorious in a close 7-5 decision victory over Ben Gilbertson (SJU) at 174 to give UWEC a 36-0 lead. Evan Lawrence (Sr. - Hugo, MN/Mahtomedi), Sam Melton (So. - Shell Lake, WI/Spooner), and Joe Schulte (Fr. - Prescott, WI) sealed the team's second shut of the season in their matches, recording three pins in the last three weight classes.
The Blugolds will have a quick turn around as they get ready to host the 2022 Don Parker Open on Saturday, February 5th up in the McPhee Physical Education Center. Spectators will not be allowed to attend due to COVID-19 protocols, but fans can follow along with the live stream beginning at 10 PM at www.blugolds.com/gameday.
