PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team was back in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual action on Tuesday. The #20 ranked Blugolds faced off against UW-Platteville for their fourth conference meet of the year. After a strong start in the midweight classes, UWEC jumped into first place of the WIAC with a 37-0 sweep over the Pioneers.
The last time UW-Eau Claire secured the rare collegiate shutout was back in January of 2017 against Thiel College. The unique result would be achieved on the road for Eau Claire's sixth dual win of the season. At 174, contender, Jared Stricker (Fr. – Ashland, WI), picked up his 16th win of the season over Nick Dado (UWP) with a 6-3 decision victory. Niall Schoenfelder (Fr. – Anticoh, IL) followed that match up with a sudden victory over the 197 contender, Tyler Hannah (UWP).
Tyler Fleetwood (So. – Fulton, IL/Wartburg) was challenged at 133 by honorable mention Zach Thompson (UWP). Fleetwood scored a 12-4 major decision to keep the shutout alive, earning his ninth win of the season.
Zach Sato (Fr. – Oswego, IL) was the fourth Blugold to overcome an opponent in the d3wrestle.com rankings. As Sato faced honorable mention Brock Parker (UWP) at 149, Sato battled fiercely for a 7-3 decision win.
Mason Hawkins (Sr. – Farmington, MN), Jack Marley (Jr. – Trempealeau, WI/G-E-T), Jake Drexler (Jr. – Stratford, WI), Connor Collins (So. – Oshkosh, WI/West), and Sam Melton (So. – Shell Lake, WI/Spooner) all received victories in their matches to help secure the 37-0 win.
The Blugolds (6-4, WIAC 3-1) will be back on the mat on Friday and Saturday, January 7th-8th, when they travel to Williamsport, PA for the Budd Whitehill Duals, hosted by Lycoming College. Both days are slated to begin at 9AM.
