Men's Tennis Wins 12th Straight Dual Meet

WATERLOO, Iowa (Blugolds.com) - The UW-Eau Claire men's tennis team picked up its seventh sweep of the season today by defeating University of Dubuque (Iowa) 9-0 at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.

The Blugolds, who are ranked 14th in the region, swept all of today's events to improve their record to 12-1 overall. However, the road to victory for the singles competitors greatly varied. Eric Wollum (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) in the No. 3 spot, Florent Marco (So.-Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) in the No. 4 match and Chris Thornton (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) in the No. 6 event each gave up only one game en route to their singles victories. Ben Robertson (So.-Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) also defeated his No. 5 opponent via solid 6-2, 6-0 set scores.

In comparison, the No. 1 and 2 matches were much closer battles, with each extending to the third set. Chris Kuna (Jr.-Edina, Minn.) and Lars Olson (Sr.-De Pere, Wis.) each lost the opening set, but fought back to defeat their opponents. Kuna ended the match 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 and Olson won 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.

Doubles play also went very smoothly for the Blugolds, as no pair gave up more than two games. Wollum and Dirk Van Rybroek (Jr.-Madison, Wis./Edgewood) picked up the lone 8-0 win in the No. 2 match. No. 1 pair Kuna and Olson as well as No. 3 duo earned 8-2 victories.

The Blugolds will continue playing in Iowa tomorrow with two matches against Wartburg College and Morningside College. The Wartburg match is set to begin at 9 a.m.
