EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The 14th nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestling team hosted UW-Platteville in their final dual of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular season on Thursday. The Blugolds would power through the final matches on their way to a 37-9 victory over the Pioneers.
After an initial win by forfeit at 125 for Jack Marley (Jr. – Trempealeau, WI/Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau), the Blugolds held strong in the later matches to secure the win. At 149, Jake Drexler (Jr. – Stratford, WI) won by pinfall at a time of 4:17.
Tristan Massie (So. – Hillsdale, WI/Barron) would win his match over Caden Fry (UWP) at the 157 class for Massie's fourth win of the season.
At 165, Chase Schmidt (Sr. – Rice Lake, WI) upset #4-ranked Nathan Wynsma for Schmidt's second victory of the year. Evan Lawrence (Sr. – Hugo, MN/Mahtomedi), James Huntley (Sr. – Woodbury, MN/Stillwater), and Austen Hakes (Sr. – River Falls, WI) would all close out with wins of their own for the convincing Eau Claire win.
The Blugolds' regular season come to a close with a team record of 3-2 and will set their eyes forward for the recently announced WIAC Wrestling Championships. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, February 28th and will be hosted by UW-Stevens Point.
