STEVENS POINT, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team traveled to Stevens Point on Friday for a match-up against WIAC rival UW-Stevens Point. Eau Claire would come out on top with the 3-1 victory.
The Blugolds started off the night with a goal at 4:43 from Taylar Meier (So.-River Falls, WI/Columbine (CO) with her 5th goal of the season. Sadie Long (Fr.-Farmington, MN/Farmington) would assist Meier with the early goal. Eau Claire would end the period with the 1-0 lead.
With a dominant second frame the Blugolds would control possession over the Pointers and would outshoot them 56-14. The aggressive offensive style of play would pay off with a pass from Hattie Verstegen (So.-Oshkosh, WI/Oshkosh North) to Danielle Slominski (Jr.-Becker, MN/Princeton) at 12:52. Blugolds would lead 2-0 going into the final period.
In the final frame the Blugolds would have a back-and-forth match with the Pointers. Stevens Point answered back after the two-goal deficient in the final minutes of the game. But then Eau Claire would get the last goal of the night with an open net goal from Samantha Bandholz (Fr.-Richfield, WI/Slinger) at 19:11, earning the Blugolds the 3-1 win.
Stephanie Martin (Sr.- Yorktown, VA/Tabb) stopped 31 of the 32 shots she faced in net, bringing her record to13-1-0 on the season.
Eau Claire, (16-2, 5-0) will face off against the Steven Point again on Saturday, January 29th at 7 PM for another matchup between the WIAC teams.
