Four Blugolds earn All-WIAC honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) office announced the 2017 All-WIAC men's basketball awards on Tuesday, with four Blugolds earning recognition.

George Diekelman (Jr. – Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) and Josh Weix (So. – Eau Claire, WI/North) were named First Team All-WIAC while Jack Martinek (Sr. New Brighton, MN/Irondale) earned Honorable Mention honors and Jared Schneidermann (Sr.-Brooklyn Park, MN/Concordia Academy) was named to the All-Defensive Team.

Diekelman earned First Team honors for the second straight season. The junior was third in the WIAC for assists per game (3.65) and fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.46). He was 10th in scoring in the WIAC (14.1), seventh for field goal percentage (.519) and was 14th in free throw percentage (.713) and three-point field goal percentage (.394). The junior led the Blugolds in minutes played, averaging 31.9 which placed him third in the conference.

Weix led the Blugolds by averaging 16 points per game, which also ranked him third in the WIAC. In the conference, he also tied for fourth in rebounding (6.2), was second in offensive rebounds (2.23) and tenth in defensive rebounds (3.96). The sophomore transfer was third in the WIAC in field goal percentage (.556) and ninth in blocked shots per game (.65). Weix was second on the team in minutes played (30.42) which ranked him eighth in the conference in his first season as a Blugold.

Martinek, who also earned All-WIAC Honorable Mention a year ago, was third in scoring for the Blugolds and 14th in the WIAC (12.5). He was also fifth in the WIAC for free throw percentage (.830) and fifth in steals per game (1.27).

Schneidermann earned a spot of the five-member All-Defensive Team for the second year in a row. The senior was second in the WIAC in rebounding (7.0), sixth in blocked shots (.77), second in defensive rebounds (5.69) and 15th in offensive rebounds (1.35).

In addition, Andrew Duxbury (Sr. – Stillwater, MN) was also named to the All-Sportsmanship Team. 

The Blugolds finished the season 18-8 overall and 8-6 in WIAC play.
