Lau and Slattery Named WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's cross country runner Darin Lau (Eau Claire, Wis./ Immanuel) , and women's cross country runner Samantha Slattery (Waunakee, Wis.) have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Samantha Slattery led the Blugold women to the team title at the St. Olaf College (Minn.) Invitational on September 16. She placed third out of 321 runners with a 6,000-meter time of 22:23, which was seven seconds behind meet winner Casey Hovland of College of St. Scholastica (Minn.). Slattery improved her time by 1 minute and 47 seconds from last year’s race at the St. Olaf Invitational.

Darin Lau won the St. Olaf College (Minn.) Invitational for the second year in a row, leading the Blugold men to the team title. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:11 and finished 23 seconds ahead of Donson Cook-Gallardo of Carleton College (Minn.). The invitational included a field of 278 runners. Lau was also named NCAA National Athlete of the Week, as selected by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for his performance.

Both Blugold teams will have a week off before hosting the UWEC Blugold Invite on Sept. 29th.
