Berry and Sawchuk WIAC Athletes of the Week

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Kendra Berry and Heather Sawchuk have each been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, it was announced today by Assistant Commissioner of Media Relations Matt Stanek.

Kendra Berry (Duluth, MN/ East) of the women's tennis team won the No. 3 singles division at the UW-Whitewater Invitational on Sept. 3. The sophomore defeated Claire Aldertonn of Carthage College (Wis.) 7-5, 6-2, and advanced to championship with a win over Vicki Andonova of Augustana College (Ill.) 3-6, 6-3, 10-4. Berry defeated Kassie Alexander of UW-Whitewater in the championship match earning a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Heather Sawchuk (Roseville, MN/Cretin Derham Hall) led the women's volleyball team to three wins over the weekend. Sawchuk led the Blugold attack at the University of Chicago (Ill.) Gargoyle Classic, averaging 4.5 kills/set and accumulating a total of 63 kills over four games. She had 28 kills in the Blugolds’ 3-2 win over Dominican University (Ill.); she also had 7 kills with no errors and a hitting percentage of .636 in a win over Rockford University (Ill.). The junior added 32 digs, while helping the Blugolds go 3-1 with wins over Rockford University, University of Chicago and Dominican University. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.  

The Blugold women's tennis team will travel to Wartburg College (Iowa) Saturday, September 10. The women's volleyball team is back in action Wednesday September 7 at St. Mary's (Winona, MN) and will compete in the Augsburg Invitational this weekend.
