EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - Eight UW-Eau Claire Athletics teams were in action Saturday, two at home and six on the road.

Women's Tennis

UW-Eau Claire 9, UW-River Falls 0
Saint Benedict (Minn.) 6, UW-Eau Claire 3

Competing at home, the Blugolds opened the day with a 9-0 conference win over UW-River Falls but fell later in the day to the College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) 6-3. Katie Gillman (No. 1) and Mary Frassetto (No. 3) both were undefeated in singles play today while the No. 3 doubles pair of Reene Nelson and Paige Kuepers won both of its matches to stay undefeated on the season (6-0).

Men's Cross Country

UW-River Falls Invitiational - 2nd of 6

With four runners finishing in the top 11, the men's cross country team finished in second place out of six teams at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course. Eau Claire narrowly trailed winner UW-La Crosse, which finished with 33 points while the Blugolds had 35. Ryan Mugan led the Blugolds as he took second with a time of 25:15.2

Women's Cross Country

UW-River Falls Invitiational - 3rd of 9

The women's cross country team finished in third place out of nine teams at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course. Alana Jenkins led the Blugolds as she finished in 12th place with a time of 23:08.7.

Volleyball

UW-Eau Claire 3, #13 Carthage College 0
UW-Eau Clarie 3, Dominican (Ill.) 1

After dropping its opening match to 13th-ranked University of Chicago at the Carthage College Tournament on Friday, the Blugold volleyball team went on to win three straight to finish the weekend 3-1. Eau Claire fell 3-0 in the opener to Chicago but won 3-1 over Illinois Wesleyan on Friday, and came back Saturday with wins over 20th-ranked Carthage College, 3-0, and Dominican University (Ill.), 3-1. The Blugolds are now 7-6 on the season and will be at home Friday against UW-Superior.

Football

Saint John's (Minn.) 17, UW-Eau Claire 14

While the football team trailed by 17 points at halftime, the Blugolds made a comeback in the second half which fell just short against Saint John's University (Minn.) 17-14 at Clemens Stadium today. Joel Sweeney scored a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters but a lost fumble ended a Blugold drive inside Saint John's 15 yard line with just over a minute to play. Sweeney had 266 yards on the ground, the second best total he has reached in his career and the sixth largest total in school history. He now has 3,175 career yards, moving past hall of famer Roger Vann and into fifth on the Blugolds' all-time career rushing yards list.

Soccer

Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) 2, UW-Eau Claire 1

Playing at home, the women's soccer team could not have asked for a better start, but it was Concordia-Moorhead who came out on top with the 2-1 victory, handing the Blugolds their first loss of the season. Just 27 seconds into the game, Jackie Nailor buried a shot from the left side of the field to give the Blugolds a 1-0 lead but Concordia scored two goals late in the first period and hung on for the win.

Women's Golf

Competing at the Division III Midwest Classic, hosted by Carleton College at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn., the Blugolds are currently in 10th place out of 16 teams with 343 strokes. Kate Engler leads the Blugolds as she is tied for 11th place with 80 strokes. The Blugolds will wrap up the two-day tournament Sunday.

Men's Golf

Competing at the Saint John's Fall Invitational at Greystone Golf Course in Sauk Centre, Minn., the Blugold men's golf team is in third place out of 23 teams after the first round. Joey Dreier and Jake Erickson lead the Blugolds as they are both tied for fourth place out of 120 golfers with 74 strokes (+2). Sunday the teams will wrap up the invite at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell, Minn.
