No. 11 Blugolds Sweep No. 21 Pointers at Home

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire volleyball team was back at the McPhee Center on Wednesday night as they hosted Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foes UW-Stevens Point. After a fast start by the Blugolds in set one, UWEC completed the 3-0 sweep for their fourth WIAC win.

The two teams went back and forth in the first set, but UW-Eau Claire never fell behind. The Blugolds benefitted from 11 Pointer errors in the opening set and a six-point run late in the frame gave the home squad the edge and 25-16 win.

Jordan Witzel (Jr. – Woodbury, MN/East Ridge) kept things consistent in the first two sets with four kills on six attempts in each frame. Witzel finished the night swinging for .500 and 13 kills.

The middle series featured an early back-and-forth between the teams, but after the 10th point UWEC went on a five-point run to distance themselves from the visitors. Charlie Nelson (So. – Lakeville, MN/Farmington) gathered 12 of her 32 assists on the game during the middle set.

The final set was backed by another big push from UWEC in the middle of the frame as another six-point run pushed the Blugolds to a five-point lead. The lead would withstand all the way through to the end for the 3-0 victory.

The Blugold defense held strong at home with Taylor Scalia posting 11 digs and Arianna Barrett (Sr. – Lakeville, MN/North) with eight.

The No. 11 ranked Blugolds will be back on the road this weekend when they travel to Chicago, IL on Saturday, October 9th to face two nationally ranked teams. They face off against No. 19 ranked Chicago University at 1:00 PM and No. 4 ranked Hope College at 3:30 PM.
