Volleyball Splits on Day One of Augsburg Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team split on the first day of the Augsburg College Invitational at Si Melby Hall today.

Opening the day against Northwestern College (Minn.), the Blugolds dropped the first two sets (25-21 and 25-19) before winning the third set 25-15. In a close fourth set, the Eagles narrowly edged the Blugolds 26-24 to take the match 3-1.

Later in the day against Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), Eau Claire won 3-1. Opening with 25-19 and 25-18 set victories, the Blugolds then dropped the third set 25-20 before winning the fourth and final set 25-18 for the match win.

In the match against Northwestern, Amy Bomgren (Sr.-Woodbury, Minn.) led the Blugolds with 16 kills while Lauren Sutherland (Jr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) had a team-high 15 digs and Emily Neave (Sr.-Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) finished with a team-best 43 set assists.

Facing Gustavus, Tessa Snell (Fr.-Edgerton, Wis.) finished with a match-high 12 kills and a .450 hitting percentage while Sutherland led the match with 18 digs. Neave had a match-high 38 sets assists.

The Blugolds are now 4-3 on the season. Northwestern holds a 6-1 record while Gustavus is 4-2.

Saturday, Eau Claire will compete two more times, facing Coe College (Iowa) at 1 p.m. and the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) to close the Augsburg Invitational.
