Women's Tennis Names 2012-13 Team Award Winners

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team awarded five players with the 2012-13 team awards, head coach Tom Gillman recently announced.

Named Player of the Year was Katie Gillman (Jr.-Red Wing, Minn.), who was honored with the award for the second time in her career. Gillman finished the season with an overall singles record of 19-6 including a 15-5 mark in dual competitions. She went 9-2 at No. 3 singles and 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Playing at No. 1 doubles, Gillman and partner Taylor Heltne (Sr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) went 14-6 in dual competitions. At the WIAC Championship last fall, Gillman won No. 3 singles while finishing as runner-up at No. 1 doubles.

Mary Frassetto (Jr.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) won the Most Improved award for the second straight season. Fressetto went 22-4 overall in singles play, including a record of 17-2 in dual competitions, primarily playing in the No. 5 spot. She played with five different partners in doubles and went 18-7 overall, which included a 14-5 No. 3 doubles mark. At the WIAC Championship last fall, Frassetto finished third in both singles and doubles play, competing at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Heltne was selected as the Blugold Award winner for the second time in her career. She competed at No. 1 singles and doubles and finished with a 21-8 overall and 15-5 dual record in singles play. In doubles competition, she went 14-6 in duals. Heltne earned runner-up finishes at the WIAC Championship in both singles and doubles play while also being named the conference's Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete.

Honored with the Coaches Award was Gretchen Bachmeier (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) for the third straight year. Bachmeier finished the year with a 17-7 overall singles record, including 7-3 No. 2 singles and 7-1 No. 3 singles records. She and partner Maddie Johnson (So.-Lakeville, Minn./South) went 15-4 in dual competitions at No. 2 doubles while finishing with a 17-7 overall mark. At the WIAC Championship last fall, Bachmeier took home runner-up finishes at No. 2 singles and doubles.

Presented with the Team Player award was Renee Nelson (So.-Madison, Wis./La Follette). She finished the season with a 2-1 singles record while going 4-1 in doubles play.
