HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team beat the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) 7-2 in the third match on its Spring Break trip today.
The Blugolds won five singles matches and two doubles matches.
In singles competition, Lexi DeMario (So.-Verona, Wis./Verona Area) dropped just two games as she won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 while Maddie Johnson (Fr.-Lakeville, Minn./South) lost only five games, winning 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 4 spot.
Winning with scores of 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, were Taylor Heltne (Jr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and Katie Gillman (So.-Red Wing, Minn.). Gretchen Bachmeier (Jr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) won 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 2 spot.
In doubles, the Blugolds won both matches with scores of 8-2. Heltne and Gillman won at No. 1 while DeMario and Mary Frassetto (So.-Oshkosh, Wis./West) won at No. 3.
Eau Claire is now 10-5 on the season.
Thursday the Blugolds will close their Spring Break trip as they compete against Smith College (Mass.). Action will get underway at 3 p.m. Eastern.
