Women's Tennis Ends Spring Break Unbeaten

Kerrville, TX (Blugolds.com) The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire women's tennis team concluded its time in Texas with a pair of victories on March 22. The Blugolds defeated Sul Ross St. 6-3, and then went on to win 8-1 over Schreiner.

In their 6-3 victory over Sul Ross St., all three doubles matches went in favor of the Blugolds, giving them a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Hannah Zevenbergen (Baldwin, Wis.) paired with Gabby Oswald (Watertown, Wis.) for the first time this season and picked up a 8-6 win at number one doubles. Kylee Funk (Foley, Minn.) and Kennedy Rusk (Nisswa, Minn./ Brainerd) won a hard fought match at number two doubles, defeating Martinez/Likiaksa (SRS) 9-7. Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake, Minn.) earned a victory by default at the number three doubles spot. In singles action, junior Molly Stewart (Amery, Wis.) improved to 13-1 on the year with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the first position. Rusk earned her first singles win pulling out a 6-1 ,6-7, 7-2 victory at the five singles line. 

Later in the day against Schreiner (TX) the Blugolds swept doubles play and won all but one singles match. Wijesinghe and Henderson, now 10-3 in doubles play, won 8-4 in the one line. Emily Cooper  (Whitebear, Minn.) with Stewart played in the two spot, winning, 8-4 and Zevenbergen and  Kendra Berry (Duluth, Minn.) picked up another victory in the third line. Wijesinghe earned her 10th singles victory defeating Stanley (SCH) 6-4, 6-2 to lead off singles action. Henderson made quick work of Smith (SCH) 6-3, 6-0, at the two spot, the senior now 13-1 on the year. It was Stewart and Berry at the three and four spots, respectively, both earning big wins. Zevenbergen's triumph over Daniel (SCH) 6-3, 6-0 at the six position improves her season singles record to 8-1.

The Blugolds who improved to 14-1 on the year, will be back in action on April 6th against Luther College (IA) in Winona, Minn.
