Moorhead, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team traveled to Moorhead, MN for their second game of the season Friday against Concordia-Moorhead. After 90 minutes of tough play, the Blugolds were able to secure a 4-1 over the Cobbers.
The match began in a surprising way, in the second minute, Concordia had an own goal to put Eau Claire up by one early.
The Blugolds put the Concordia defense to work right away. With a series of well executed passing combinations, Kori Millis (Fr. – Shakopee, MN) took a shot and found the back of the net in the 15th minute with an assist from Megan Hansen (Jr. – Andover, MN/Anoka) to give them a 2-0 lead.
Later in the game, the Cobbers found a bit of momentum, scoring in the 58th minute, but the Blugolds quickly turned it around again with a beautiful volley to the top left corner of the goal by Josie Ellingson (Fr. – Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) to bring the Blugold lead to 3-1.
Hansen led the Eau Claire offense all day with 6 of their 15 shots, eventually getting a goal of her own in the 70th minute with the help of Lauren Talbot (Sr. – Anoka, MN) to increase the Eau Claire lead and lock in what would be the final game score.
Both teams battled hard, totaling 18 fouls between the two. However, the Blugolds capitalized on Cobber mistakes to gain and dominate possession throughout the game which led to their exciting win.
Anna Sveiven (Sr. – Blaine, MN/Centennial) stopped all three shots she faced in the first half and is credited with the win. Sveiven and the Blugolds are now 1-0-1 on the season.
UW-Eau Claire will hit the road once again on Sunday when they travel to St. Scholastica. Kickoff between the Blugolds and the Saints will kick off at 2 PM.
