Two Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Two UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Selected this week were women's swimmer Nicole Dorvinen (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) and women's soccer player Katie Richter (Jr.-Waukesha, Wis./West).

Dorvinen led the UW-Eau Claire effort, picking up three wins, as the Blugolds defeated UW-Stevens Point for the first time since the 1997-98 season, while falling to St. Cloud State University (Minn.) on Oct. 29.  Dorvinen raced to victory in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:12.45 and the 400-yard individual medley in just 4:44.06.  She also beat her challengers by a full 15 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle event with a final time of 10:50.28.

The Blugolds split conference games during the week but Richter played a key role in a 3-2 win at UW-Stout on Oct. 26.  She scored the Blugolds' final two goals, including the eventual game-winner, in the second half to give the Blugolds a 3-1 lead.  UW-Stout scored later in the match, but the Blugolds held on for the win.   UW-Eau Claire dropped a 2-1 decision at UW-Whitewater on Oct. 29.
