No. 5 Blugolds fall to No. 4 Falcons

SUPERIOR, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team faced No. 4 UW-River Falls on Friday night in a battle of two of the top teams in the nation, with the Blugolds coming up short, 4-1.

The Falcons jumped to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first period.

In the second, Hattie Verstegen (So. - Oshkosh, WI/North) scored an unassisted goal at 6:58 to get the Blugolds on the board. However, River Falls would answer with another goal late in the period to maintain the three-goal lead.

Despite out-shooting the Falcons 8-2 in the third, the Blugolds were unable to find the back of the net, dropping just their third game of the season and first loss in WIAC play.

Stephanie Martin (Sr.- Yorktown, VA/Tabb) tallied 20 saves in goal for Eau Claire and drops to 17-2-0 on the season.

Eau Claire (21-3-0, 8-1-0 WIAC) and River Falls (22-1-0, 7-1-0 WIAC) will face off again for the regular season WIAC title on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m. at Hobbs Ice Arena.
