Meier nets game-winner as No. 5 Blugolds down Pointers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The No. 5 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team hosted UW-Stevens Point for game two of their weekend series on Saturday, for Cancer Awareness and Alumni night. The Blugolds would come up big and skate away with the 1-0 victory.

The Blugolds dominated the Pointers in possession and would maintain control for the majority of the first period. In the last minutes Eau Claire would get a power play but would not be able to capitalize on the opportunity and would go into the second with a 0-0 tie.

With an exciting second period and plenty of action the Blugolds and the Pointers would be fighting to break the tie and get the first goal. Both teams had their chances on net but both goalies came up with big saves keeping the score even at zero.

The Blugolds would be the ones to finally break the no goal game with a one-two pass from Hattie Verstegen (So.-Oshkosh,WI/Oshkosh North) to Taylar Meier (So.-River Falls,WI/Columbine (CO)) at 4:58 in the third for the 1-0 lead. Eau Claire would battle until the final whistle, and it would pay off with the 1-0 win over the Pointers. 

Stephanie Martin (Sr.-Yorktown,VA/Tabb) tallies another win in next advancing her record to 14-1-0 and also recorded her third shutout of the season.

Eau Claire, (16-2-0, 5-0-0) continues conference play as they face off against UW-Superior on Wednesday, February 9th for a 7 PM puck drop.
