Blugolds skate to a tie with Pointers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (blugolds.com) - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with UW-Stevens Point, after trailing early in the 2nd period.

Eau Claire started the game strong by outshooting Stevens Point in the first, two periods 19 to 14, but were not able to find the back of the net until the final minutes of the middle frame.

Ella Ierino (Jr. – Duluth, MN) scored the team's first goal of the season to cut the Stevens Point lead in half before the period ended. With four players making their NCAA debut, Head Coach Erik Strand was proud of how his team competed in their first game in over 300 days. "I loved our team response and resolve", Strand said, "It is great to see from such a young team."

The Blugolds would enter the final period trailing by one, but Samantha Scherling (So. – Rogers, MN) would put home a rebound in front to tie the game at two.

Both teams would find chances in the extra overtime period, but neither could find the back of the net.

Stephanie Martin (Jr. – Yorktown, VA/Tabb) stopped 16 of the 18 shots she faced in her first start for the Blugolds. Martin will go into the next game with a record of 0-0-1.

The Blugolds will complete their two game series with the Pointers on Friday, as they travel to Stevens Point, WI and play at Ice Hawks Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7PM.
