Women's Golf Takes Fifth at O'Brien National Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (Blugolds.com) – The sixth-ranked UW-Eau Claire women's golf team finished in fifth place out of 10 teams at the two-day 2012 O'Brien National Invitational at Warren Golf Course today.

The tournament featured 10 teams ranked 15th or higher in the preseason Golf World/WGCA Top 25 Poll.

Methodist University (N.C.), which has won 15 straight NCAA Division III titles, took first at the O'Brien Invite with 633 strokes. Washington University-St. Louis (Mo.) was second with 640 while Centre College (Ky.) was third with 641. DePauw University (Ind.) took fourth with 649 strokes and the Blugolds were fifth with 659.

Leading the Blugolds was Catherine Wagner (Sr.-Austin, Minn.), who tied for third place with 154 strokes (+10). George Fox's Kelsey Morrison won medalist honors with 149 strokes out of 63 golfers.

Two other Blugolds finished in the top 30. Kate Engler (So.-Beloit, Wis./F.J. Turner) tied for 11th with 160 strokes and Emily Stone (So.-Eden Prairie, Minn.) tied for 27th with 167 strokes.

Next up, the Blugolds will compete at the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang Invitational at Marshall Golf Club in Marshall, Minn. Competition will get underway Saturday and will conclude Sunday.
