Men's Tennis Dominate the Oles; Fall to the Firebirds in Weekend Split

OWATONNA, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's tennis team was back in action on Saturday and continued their nonconference schedule with matches against St. Olaf College and Carthage College away from home. The Blugolds fell in a tight 3-6 battle to the Carthage Firebirds but split the weekend with a dominant 8-1 win over the St. Olaf Oles.

UW-Eau Claire started on the right foot in the first match against St. Olaf as they took two of the three contests in doubles for a 2-1 lead. Tyler Grosz (Jr. – Hudson, WI) and Victor Simoes (Jr. – Sao Paulo, Brazil) earned victories at No. 1 and 2 singles to keep the Blugold momentum rolling through the morning session. Otto Schluter (Fr. Henfield, England) and Mike McGuire (Fr. – Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary's Springs) both earned their first career wins as Blugolds at No. 4 and 6 singles. Colin Chapman (Fr. – Green Bay, WI/Southwest) and Ethan Wurtzel (So. – Menomonie, WI) sealed the clean sweep in singles for UWEC and earn the 8-1 team win.

I the second match in Rochester, MN, the Blugolds fell in a close 3-6 battle to the Carthage Firebirds. Grosz continued his individual success by picking up wins at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles with Hunter Roseth (Jr. – Lakeville, MN/South), but Carthage took the remaining doubles matches to put Eau Claire behind. John Foley (Jr. – Wayzata, MN) was the other lone victor for UWEC in the second match as he defeated C. Mitev (CC) 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.  

The Blugolds will return home on Saturday, February 26th to take on Hamline University (Minn.) at the John & Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1:30PM.
