Men's Soccer Scores Five Times for Ninth Win of the Season

DULUTH, Minn. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team traveled to Duluth, Minnesota to play against the College of St. Scholastica in a 5 to 2 victory.

In the first half the Blugolds dominated possession and it showed when Evan Wilson (Fr.-Apple Valley, MN/Eastview) scored a free kick for the Blugolds in the 19th minute of the game, getting the Blugolds on the board first. Eau Claire would continue to put on the pressure forcing an own goal by St. Scholastica, to add to the lead before halftime.

The Blugolds would continue their skill work in the second half.

In the 57th minute Nathan Donovan (Fr. - Hazel Green, WI/Wahlert Catholic) would combine with Will Heinen (Fr.- Champlin, MN/Champlin), who found Carter Thiesfeld (Fr.- Forest Lake, MN/Forest Lake) on a breakaway against the Saints keeper. Thiesfeld placed the ball in the back of the net for the Blugolds third goal of the game. Thiesfeld's breakaway tally is his fourth of the year. Only three minutes later Heinen would add to the Eau Claire lead for the fourth unanswered goal of the game at the 60th minute mark.

St. Scholastica answered back in the 67th minute with 2 goals in just under a minute, cutting the Blugolds lead in half. Both teams would battle for the next goal with the Saints drawing a foul inside the box, giving the Blugolds a penalty kick. Donovan stepped up and rifled the PK past the Saints' goalkeeper for the final goal of the 5-2 win. Donovan's goal from the penalty spot was his 11th goal of the season.

Donovan, Heinen, and Wilson each ended the game with multiple points for Eau Claire.

Spencer Banks (Fr.-Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) would be credited the win with his two saves made in his 67 minutes of play.

Eau Claire, now 9-2, return to Simpson Field to host UW-Whitewater on Saturday, October 16th for a 1 PM homecoming game.
