SUPERIOR, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team was back on the road for a Sunday afternoon matinee against the UW-Superior Yellowjackets. After an explosive first half by Nathan Donovan (Fr. – Hazel Green, WI/Wahlert Catholic), the Blugolds challenged every ball and held on to the lead for a 3-1 win.

Box Score

In a very competitive environment, UW-Eau Claire opened the scoring in the 31st minute after a through ball by Hayden Boich (Fr. – Cottage Grove, MN/Park) was flicked behind the Superior defense by Will Heinen (Fr. – Champlin, MN/Champlin Park). Nathan Donovan broke through the back line and slotted the ball into the net for his eighth goal of the year.

Just minutes later, Donovan completed his brace after putting home a rebound behind of the Yellowjacket goalkeeper. His ninth goal of the season puts him as one of three of the top goal scorers (9) in NCAA Division III after the first three weeks of games.

In the second half, the Blugolds would add to their lead after John Wilke (Fr. – Lake Mills, WI) played a through ball ahead of Will Heinen up the left sideline. Heinen sprinted down the left side, cut back to the top of the 18-yard box, and ripped a curling shot to the far side over the keeper to make it 3-0.

The Yelllowjackets would break the UWEC clean sheet in the 80th minute, but the Blugolds would hold on for the 3-1 win.

Spencer Banks (Fr. – Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) stopped one of the two shots he faced and was credited with the win. Banks is now 4-2-0 in his first season

The Blugolds will return home for a three-game homestand, beginning with Ripon College on Wednesday, September 22nd. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM.
