Blugolds Face First Loss of the Season

DUBUQUE, Iowa (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's soccer team traveled to Dubuque, IA for their second away game of 2021. After a thrilling first victory in their inaugural campaign, UW-Eau Claire came up just short against Loras College, 2-1.

Box Score

The momentum swung against the Blugolds early as Loras opened the scoring in the third minute for a 1-0 lead. UW-Eau Claire didn't back down and converted on a counterattack minutes later. Carter Theisfeld (Fr. – Forest Lake, MN) sprinted down the right sideline, cut back, and crossed the ball to multiple Blugolds in the middle. Nathan Donovan (Fr. – Hazel Green, WI/Wahlert Catholic) was positioned in the center of the box, put a touch on the ball, and watched his first goal of his career trickle into the net for a tie game. The tally in the eighth minute was Donovan's first as a Blugold and of his collegiate career.

The score would remain deadlocked at 1-1 through halftime but would ultimate be broken in the 81st. Loras would receive a fortunate bounce to their forward, who volleyed it far and outside of the UWEC keeper for the game winner. The Blugolds showed more offensive presence in the second half but could not find the back of the net in the eventual loss.

Spencer Banks (Fr. – Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) would get his first career start and saved four of the six shots he faced. Banks starts his season with a 0-1-0 record.

The Blugolds will take the weekend off as they prepare for a pair of games in Moorhead, MN next weekend. They will face Concordia-Moorhead on Friday and Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, September 3rd and 4th. This first match is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM, with the second beginning at 1:00 PM
