EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey hosted St. Norbert College on Saturday night, falling in a tight game by a score of 4-3.
Ty Readman (Sr. – Edmonton, Alberta/Vimy Ridge Academy) got the Blugolds going early, finding the back of the net just two minutes into the game. Connor Szmul (So. – Castle Rock, CO/Castle View) and Charles Weiand (Sr. – Rosemount, MN) earned assists on the goal.
The Green Knights would tie it up early in the second, with a goal at the 4:55 mark.
Later in the period St. Norbert would be called for boarding and the Blugolds would take advantage of five-minute major. Simon Sagissor (Sr. – Stillwater, MN) would score his third goal of the season at 11:27 with an assist from Quinn Green (So. – West Chicago, IL/St. Charles East).
The lead was short-lived with the Green Knights scoring at 15:20. After two periods of play, the score remained knotted at 2.
In the third, Connor Koviak (Sr. – Canton, MI/Plymouth) gave Eau Claire a 3-2 led with a goal at 7:08, but St. Norbert would respond with a goal of their own at 8:24 to tie it again.
The Green Knights tallied the go-ahead goal with just under three minutes remaining in regulation and would hold on for the 4-3 win.
The Blugolds narrowly out-shot the Green Knights 23-20 and won 36 faceoffs to St. Norbert's 30.
In goal, Riley McVeigh (Sr. – Calgary, AB/Rundle College) took the loss in net, recording 16 saves on the night.
The Blugolds (3-5-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) and Green Knights will return to Hobbs Sunday for game two at 4 p.m.
