Men's Hockey downs Superior 5-1 in WIAC opener

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team hosted UW-Superior Friday night to open conference play with the Blugolds earning a 5-1 victory.

After an early goal by the Yellowjackets, Eau Claire would respond with three goals in a 10-minute span.

Simon Sagissor (Sr. – Stillwater, MN) tied it up with a goal at the 6:14 mark of the first period off an assist from Kyle Oleksiuk (Fr. – Winnipeg, Manitoba) while Ty Readman (Sr. – Edmonton, Alberta/Vimy Ridge Academy) gave Eau Claire the lead 90 seconds later with and assist from Connor Szmul (So. – Castle Rock, CO/Castle View). Minutes later, it was Quinn Green (So. – West Chicago, IL/St. Charles East) who would tally a shorthanded goal at the 14:02 mark. Peter Jacobs (Fr. – Carlsbad, CA/Lewis Palmer) earned the assist on the goal.

Szmul tallied a goal of his own in the second, scoring at 10:54 thanks to assists from Jordan Kovacs (So. – Shelby Township, MN/Warren De La Salle) and Colin Stein (Fr. – Pewaukee, WI/Catholic Memorial).

After a physical third period, Sagissor and the Blugolds converted on a 5-on-3 advantage with under a minute to play, with the senior scoring just before time expired.

In goal, Ryan Ouellette (Fr. – Colorado Springs, CO/Liberty) earned the win to improve to 3-1-0 and recorded 21 saves.

The Blugolds converted on one of three powerplay opportunities while keeping the Yellowjackets in check, successfully killing off all seven powerplays. Eau Claire also out-shot Superior 33-22 on the night.

The Blugolds (3-3-0, 1-0-0 WIAC) will return to Hobbs Saturday as they host UW-Stout for more WIAC action. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
