EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team hosted No. 7 Augsburg University on Saturday night, falling in a hard-fought contest, 1-0.
The first two periods were a defensive battle, with both teams getting few shots on net and neither team was able to capitalize on powerplay opportunities, with Eau Claire going 0-1 but killing off all four powerplays for the Auggies.
The third period saw much of the same, but it was the Auggies who would break the tie with a goal midway through the period.
Despite several good looks and a hit pipe with two minutes to play, the Blugolds were unable to find the back of the net.
The Blugolds narrowly out-shot the Auggies, 23-22 and held a slight edge in faceoffs, winning 35 of 69.
In goal, Ryan Ouellette (Fr. – Colorado Springs, CO/Liberty) tallied 21 saves and falls to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Blugolds (2-3-0) will return to Hobbs next weekend as they host UW-Superior on Friday night and UW-Stout on Saturday for Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
