EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's hockey team hosted Gustavus Adolphus College for their home opener on Friday night, taking down the Golden Gusties by a score of 2-0.
Despite two powerplay opportunities and out-shooting the Gusties 26-14 in the first two periods, the Blugolds weren't able to capitalize and the game remained tied heading into the third.
But in the third Eau Claire wouldn't take long to get on the board as Andrew McGlynn (Sr. – St. Louis, MO/Christian Brothers College) found the back of the net just forty seconds into the period thanks to assists from Derek Hammer (Sr. – Woodbury, MN/East Ridge) and Jon Richards (Sr. – Callaway, MN/Detroit Lakes.
Hammer would put the game out of reach late in the third, lighting the lap with just under a minute to play off an assist from Ty Readman (Sr. – Edmonton, Alberta/Vimy Ridge Academy).
Eau Claire out-shot Gustavus 43-21 on the night while goaltender Ryan Ouellette (Fr. – Colorado Springs, CO/Liberty) tallied 21 saves to improve to 2-0-0 on the season.
The Blugolds (2-2-0) will return to Hobbs on Saturday night as they host No. 7 Augsburg University for youth Day. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
