Blugolds' Bench Help Not Enough in Wild Conference Road Loss

MENOMONIE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team went on the road for Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Wednesday as they visited the UW-Stout Blue Devils. The Blugolds' bench players helped gather 33 of the team's 90 points in Wednesday's match but came up short in double overtime falling 95-90.

After a close first ten minutes, the Blugolds went on a 15-2 run capped off by a pair of three's by Michael Casper (So. – Merrill, WI). The Blugolds raced out to their highest scoring first half of the season, 46-35 led by Brock Voigt (Jr. – Sun Prairie, WI) scoring 14 of his 20 points in the first half.

At the start of the second half, the Blue Devils came out strong to catch Eau Claire. After UW-Stout took the lead 53-52 at the 12:19 mark, the Blugolds responded with a 9-0 run led by a pair of threes by Drew Maloney (Fr. – St. Charles, MN). The Blue Devils would tighten the game up for the remainder of the second half. A pair of free throws by Brock Voigt tied the game at 75 within the final minute to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, the Blugolds made a series of clutch free throws to keep the game tied at 86 with 40 seconds to go, eventually forcing a second overtime.

In Double OT, the Blugolds shooting had gone cold, finishing 1 of 6 in the final 5 minutes and coming up short against the Blue Devils falling 95-90.

The Blugolds (8-8, WIAC 1-3) will be back at home on Saturday, January 15th when they host WIAC opponent, UW-La Crosse. Tipoff is scheduled for 5PM.
