Men's Basketball Bounces Back With First WIAC Win

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire men's basketball team was looked to rebound after opening Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a tough loss to No. 10 ranked UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday. With a trip to UW-Stevens Point on the agenda for Saturday evening, the Blugolds earned a 72-56 WIAC victory over the Pointers for their sixth win of the season.

The Blugolds opened the contest with one of their seven three-pointers in the first possession to set the tone early. Despite surrendering that lead within the next two UWSP possessions, Brock Voigt (Jr. – Sun Prairie, WI) tallied his first bucket of the night to gain a 5-4 lead that lasted for the remainder of the evening.

Cade Hall (So. - Mauston, WI) closed out the first half with a team high seven points. Voigt, Carter Hanke (Jr. - Marathon, WI), and Michael Casper (So. - Merrill, WI) followed suit with six points each to push the advantage to eight at halftime.

UWEC outscored the home team 33-25 in the second half and tallied a 12-0 run in the opening five minutes to keep control of the lead. Their biggest lead of the game came shortly after with a bucket and a free throw from B. Voigt with 11 minutes remaining extended the UWSP deficit to 24.

The closed the evening with a total of 27 bench points and shooting 52.9% from the field. Michael Casper tallied a total of ten points and Carter Brooks gather nine rebounds.

The Blugolds (6-3, WIAC 1-1) turn back to nonconference play on Tuesday, December 7th when they host UW-Superior at Zorn Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7PM.
