Nine Blugolds earn WIAC recognition

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) announced the 2021 All-WIAC honors on Thursday, with nine Blugolds earning recognition, the most since 2013.

Earning first team honors was placekicker Brady Frantal (Fr. – Appleton, WI/North) who was 10 of 11 on field goal attempts this season and was 29 of 31 for extra points, tallying 59 points for the Blugolds.


Also recognized from the Blugold special teams was Cole Dunbar (Jr- Kirkland, IL/Hiawatha) who was named honorable mention.

Three were named to the offensive second team, lineman Seth Mitchell (Jr. – De Pere, WI), running back Austin Belot (Sr. – Neenah, WI) and wide receiver Darius Jones (Sr- Ramsey, MN/Anoka).

Mitchell was part of the offensive line that helped Belot rush for a league-leading 1,405 yards, nearly 250 yards more than any other back in the WIAC and ranks him fifth in all of Division III. Belot averaged 140.5 yards per game (6.2 per carry) and also scored 10 touchdowns.

Despite only playing in eight games, Jones had career highs this season, racking up 493 receiving yards on 28 receptions and scoring three touchdowns.

In addition, senior receiver Joe Swanson (Sr. – Osceola, WI) was named honorable mention after also putting up career highs this season. Swanson had 26 receptions for 409 years and recorded six touchdowns for the Blugolds.

On the defensive side of the ball, Trevor Nelson (Sr. – Hammond, WI/St. Croix Central) was named to the second team while Alex Mashak (Sr. – Lodi, WI) was named honorable mention.  

Nelson anchored the defense with 25 tackles (6.5 for a loss), four breakups, three sacks and a fumble recovery while Mashak led the team with 71 tackles and 7.5 tackles for a loss and also had two interceptions.

Representing the Blugolds on the All-Sportsmanship Team was defensive back Carmelo Rosado (Sr. – Beaver Dam, WI).

The Blugolds finished the season 3-7 overall and 1-6 in WIAC play.
