Treichel's Big Day At The Plate Not Enough In Baseball Regular Season Finale

Treichel's Big Day At The Plate Not Enough In Baseball Regular Season Finale

WHTIEWATER, Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire baseball team hit the road for their final games of the season. After splitting a doubleheader with UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, the Blugolds dropped both games of the Saturday doubleheader, 12-2 (7 inn.) and 14-4 (8 inn.).

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

In game one, the Blugolds were forced to mount a comeback in the middle innings after a hot start by the Warhawks. Otto Treichel (So. - Madison, WI/West) started things off with a single down the right field line in the fifth. Two batters later, Jacob Lacy (Jr. - Shawano, WI) earned the first UWEC run with a double to left field. The next inning, it would be Treichel again contributing to the scoreboard. After Nate Witte (Fr. - Woodbury, MN/East Ridge) was walked, Treichel hit a double to left field to score the runner and finish the day with two hits in three at bats. Treichel's offense wasn't enough as the Warhawks scored three runs of their own in the 5th and 6th to reach the ten-run rule final.

Game two would paint a similar picture as Eau Claire found themselves down in early innings. Treichel added to his batting totals with a two-run double to left center, scoring Witte and Will Jillek (Sr. - Hudson, WI). With the bases loaded in the 6th, Jacob Lacy would add to the Blugold comeback with a two-run single to the right side. The offense would not be able to catch up as Whitewater added 5 runs on the final innings to reach the ten-run threshold.

The Blugolds finish their season with a 5-23 overall record and in 7th place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This was the first season UW-Eau Claire has had baseball back since the team was disbanded after the 1994-95 season.
