ST. PETER, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's tennis team concluded competition at the ITA Regional and Gustie Fall Invite on Sunday at Gibbs Tennis Courts on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus.
Renee Nelson (Sr.-Madison, WI/La Follette) went 4-0 to win the Gustie Fall Invite singles Draw #4. Nelson defeated Gabi Rivera of Macalester 6-0, 6-0, Madisen Crow of Luther 6-2, 6-2, Brooke Hendricks of UW-Whitewater 7-5, 6-4 and Taylor Shortly of Gustavus in the championship match 6-2, 6-2.
Amy Orthaus (So.-Lake City, MN) won all four of her matches to win the Gustie Fall Invite singles draw #6. Orthaus defeated Katilyn Davies of Concordia-Moorhead 6-1, 6-1, Anna Pearson of Luther 6-1, 6-4, Martha Hogan of St. Olaf 6-1, 6-4 and Megan Vandenberg of St. Mary's 7-5, 6-2.
Brooke Volpone (Fr.-Monticello, MN) won draw #7 at the Gustie Fall Invite by going 4-0. Volpone defeated Gabby Queenan of Macalester 7-6 (4), 6-3, Shannon Hautzinger of Grinnell 6-0, 6-3, Catilin Fitzgerald of UW-Whitewater 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 and Sam Fleming of UW-La Crosse 1-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Olivia Gallagher (So.-Lodi, WI) went 3-1 advancing to the finals of draw #3 at the Gustie Fall Invite. Gallagher defeated Emily Rasmussen of St. Norbert 6-2, 6-1, Sam Hoyord of Carroll 6-4, 6-2, Kelsey Laktash of UW-Whitewater before losing to Erin MacDonald of St. Olaf 6-1, 5-7, 10-3.
In doubles competition at the Gustie Fall Invite, Nelson and Gallagher won the consolation doubles No. 1 draw. They started with an 8-1 win over Luther opponents and then won two more to advance to the championship. In the title match, they picked up an 8-5 victory over Carroll opponents.
The Blugolds will return home for their first home match of the season when they host UW-Stevens Point on October 3. Action will take place at the Simpson Tennis Courts beginning at 3 p.m.
