Volleyball Closes Augsburg Invitational with a Win and a Loss

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's volleyball team opened the day with a win but fell later in the day to finish the two-day Augsburg College Invitational with a 2-2 record at Si Melby Hall.

The Blugolds started the day with a 3-0 win over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) but fell 3-1 to Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) to finish the day.

The Northwestern match was closely contested, and while the Blugolds won in three sets, they won by four or fewer points in each set (25-23, 25-22, 25-21). - Box Score

Eau Claire trailed just once in the first set but the match was tied late at 22 before the Blugolds pulled off the win. Nortwestern led a majority of the second set and led 19-13 before Eau Claire used a 5-0 run to get back into the set. The Blugolds then outscored the Eagles 7-3 the rest of the way to secure the win. Eau Claire never trailed in the final set.

Kelly Schuh (Sr.-Appleton, Wis./Hortonville), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Blugolds with 12 kills as she hit .308 while Alexis Wong (Jr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) finished with a .500 hitting percentage going 11-for-22 with no errors. Lauren Sutherland (Sr.-Dayton, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian) had a team-high 14 digs and a match-best four service aces. Maggie Holcombe (Fr.-Shakopee, Minn.) led the team with 24 set assists.

Against Gustavus, the Blugolds dropped the first two sets (25-15, 25-23) but won the third 25-20. Gustavus won the fourth set 25-19. - Box Score

In the opening set, Gustavus never trailed but it was closer in the second set. The two teams kept the second set close and found themselves with a 20-20 tie before Gustavus captured the win. Eau Claire led most of the third set, getting up at one time by six points (15-9), before taking the win. Gustavus jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth set and never trailed the rest of the way.

Schuh again led the Blugolds with 14 kills while Wong had 12. Sutherland tied for a match-high with 14 digs and Holcombe led the Blugolds with 26 set assists.

While the Blugolds compiled 50 kills against Gustavus, they also committed 33 attack errors, 23 more than in their first match against Northwestern.

Eau Claire is now 4-5 on the season.

Next Friday and Saturday the Blugolds will be in Kenosha, Wis. for the Carthage College Tournament. They will open the two-day, four-match tournament against the University of Chicago at 6 p.m. Friday.
