Women's Tennis Wins Two in Iowa

Mount Vernon, IA (Blugolds.com)- The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins Saturday. The Blugolds won 6-3 over Grinnell College Saturday morning and went on to sweep Coe College Saturday afternoon.

Against Grinnell the Blugolds got out to a hot start winning two of three double matches. Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, MN) paired with Lindsey Henderson (Prior Lake, Minn.) got things started with a 8-4 triumph at number one doubles. Hanna Zevenbergen (Baldwin,Wis./ Baldwin-Woodville) and Molly Stewart (Amery, WI) didn't miss a beat following with a 8-6 victory at number two doubles. With a 2-0 lead heading into single splay the Blugolds' were able to pull away after the first three singles matches. Wijesinghe made quick work of Nielsen (GCW) 6-1, 6-2 at number one singles, while Stewart earned a tough win at number two singles. Henderson earned a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory at number three singles, and Emma Barnd (Wells, Minn/ United South Central)  got in the mix with a win at number five singles.

In the second dual of the day the Blugolds swept Coe College 9-0. It was teh duo of Wijesinghe and Henderson that got the Blugolds' rolling again in their second dual. The pair defeated Lauren French/Isabella Hoppenjans (COEW) 8-3 at number one doubles. Stewart and Zevenbergen earned another victory at the number two doubles spot, while Barnd and Alexa Brooks (Beaver Dam, Wis.) were able to finish the doubles sweep with a 8-5 win at number three doubles. In singles action Wijesinghe and Stewart  earned their second wins of the day at number one and two singles, respectively. Henderson toughed out a victory in three sets at number three singles winning, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. Barnd triumphed over White (COE) 7-5, 6-2 at the five slot and Rachel Slonac (Muskego, Wis.) finshed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-4 win at number six singles. 

The Blugolds are ranked No. 15 in the region and with two wins today improve to 14-4 on the year. The Blugold women will travel to UW-Whitewater to face UW-La Crosse in the WIAC Final Four on Saturday April 27. The Blugolds are the number three seed in the tournament and UW- La Crosse is the two seed.
