St. Peter, Minn. (Blugolds.com)- The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire women's tennis team competed at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships and the Gustavus Fall Invite at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn over the weekend.
Three of the Blugold women competed in the singles ITA Regional on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Junior, Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, Minn.) won four matches and reached the quarterfinal before losing to the singles champion Ginger Valentine (Gustavus). Molly Stewart (Amery, Wis.) earned her way into the round of 32 with a first round bye, followed by a triumph over Sulivan (GAC) 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 64. Stewart fell in the round of 32 to Riermann(BU). Emily Cooper (White Bear, Minn/Mahtomedi) had a first round victory over Bush (COE) 6-3, 6-3, but lost to Kitchel (UWW), who took 2nd overall, in the round of 64. In doubles action at the regional Wijesinghe partnered with Cooper and the duo reached the semi-final round before losing to Conrad/Prins (Carleton) 8-1. Stewart paired up with Hanna Zevenbergen (Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin Woodville), the duo won three matches, eventually losing in the round of 16 to Riemann/Riemann (BU), who went on to win the doubles championship.
The Blugolds also competed at the Gustavus Fall Invite, Zevenbergen won all four of her matches and win the championship in her draw. The junior defeated Kylee Funk (St. Kate's) 8-1 in the first round, went on to earn a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ella Hagopien (St. Olaf) in the second round and advance to the round of 4. In the semi-final Zevenbergen defeated Bryce Bigelow (UWW) 6-2,6-3, and won the championship match 6-4, 6-2 over Hayley Trebill (Gustavus).
