Women's Tennis Wins Two

Eau Claire, Wis. (Blugolds.com) The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins Saturday. The Blugolds played for the first time at the state-of-the-art John and Fay Menard Tennis Center that opened this past Wednesday. Eau Claire swept the University of Northwestern (St. Paul) Saturday morning and went on to sweep St. Norbert Saturday afternoon.

Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, MN) led the Blugolds with two wins at No.1 singles, the sophomore defeated Lapinski (UNW) 6-1, 6-0, and followed it up with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Witt (SNC). Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake, MN) had a great day with two dominating wins at No. 2 singles. The senior earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Paskewitz (UNW), later in the day was victorious over Gahan (SNC) 6-2, 6-2. Molly Stewart (Amery, WI) and Kendra Berry (Duluth, MN) had tremendous days winning both matches at number three and four singles, respectively. Emily Cooper (White Bear, Minn.) was dominant in both her matches, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Gross (UNW) and 6-0, 6-4 over Hetzel (SNC) . Hannah Zevenbergen (Baldwin, WI/ Baldwin-Woodville)  continued her winning ways earning two wins at teh number six slot. 

In doubles action Henderson and Wijesinghe won their No. 1 doubles match Saturday morning 8-2 over Northwestern.  The pair followed up with an 8-1 win Saturday afternoon over St. Norbert. Cooper and Stewart defeated Knight/Spears (UNW) 8-6 at number two doubles and won 8-1 over the number two doubles team from St. Norbert. Zevenbergen and doubles partner Berry defeated Northwestern 8-4 and St. Norbert  8-4 and No. 3 doubles. 

The Blugold women are now 18-1 on the season and will be the #3 seed in the WIAC team championships next weekend. Eau Claire will face UW-La Crosse in the semifinal on April 28.
