Women's Tennis Tops Winona State and UW- La Crosse

Eau Claire, Wis. (Blugolds.com) -The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Women's tennis team defeated Winona State 8-1 on Friday Oct. 6 and UW- La Crosse 5-4 on Oct. 7 to improve to 6-1 on the season.

The Blugolds defeated Division II Winona State 8-1 on Friday night. The Blugolds won all three doubles matches, starting with an 8-5 win from Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake, Minn.) in the No. 1 doubles slot. At No. 2 doubles duo Molly Stewart (Amery, Wis.) and Emily Cooper  (Whitebear, Minn.) defeated Gantz/Kappes (WinST) 8-5.  Emily Cooper  (Whitebear, Minn.) and Hannah Zevenbergen (Baldwin, Wis.) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at the No. 3.

The Blugolds won five of six singles matches including a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles by Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, Minn.). Also earning victories in singles action was: Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake, Minn.),Molly Stewart (Amery, Wis.), Emily Cooper  (Whitebear, Minn.) and Hannah Zevenbergen (Baldwin, Wis.).

 

On Saturday Oct. 7 the Blugold women earned a big victory over conference opponent UW-La Crosse. The No. 3 doubles pair of  Molly Sanvik (Winona, Minn.) and Hannah Zevenbergen (Baldwin, Wis.) earned the Blugolds only doubles win with an 8-4 victory. Eau Claire came back in singles action with a win from Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake, Minn.) at the No. 2 spot and a pivotal win by Molly Stewart (Amery, Wis.)  at the No. 3 singles spot to tie the match up at 3 wins a piece. Kendra Berry (Duluth, Minn/ East) defeated Andersen (UWL) 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 at the No. 4 spot and Emily Cooper  (Whitebear, Minn.) was victorious of Bublitz (UWL) in the No. 5 slot, giving the Blugolds the 5-4 edge.

With both wins over the weekend the Blugold women improve to 6-1 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. The women's tennis team will travel to Steven's Point next weekend and will face Bethel University and UW-Stevens Point.
