St. Peter, Minn. (Blugolds.com)- The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire women's tennis team competed at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn over the weekend.
Sarah Henderson (Prior Lake, MN) competed in the second draw in singles play. After a first round bye, the junior defeated Clope (UW- La Crosse) in the second round, followed by Talyanski (UW-Whitewater) in the third round. Henderson fell in the semi-final to Michaela Schulz (Gustavus).
Natalie Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, MN) had a great showing in the bottom quarter of the singles tournament. The freshman defeated Goebel (UW-Whitewater) 3-6, 6-1 ,11-9 in the first round and won convincingly over McLeod (St. Thomas) in the second round. Wijesinghe lost in the third round to Park (Carleton).
Molly Stewart (Amery,WI) and Olivia Gallagher (Lodi, Wi) won the consolation bracket of the bottom half of the doubles tournament. The pair defeated Solberg/Carroll (Concordia,Wis) 8-4 and then advanced to the championship with a win over Dorr/Ecksram (UW-Oshkosh). Stewart and Gallagher won the championship match over Lefler/Koppa (UW-Oshkosh).
At the Gustie Fall Invite Bailey Budnik (Manitowoc, WI/ Lincoln) was the singles draw three Champion. The freshman had four rounds of dominating wins including an 8-0 win in the championship over Ruth Rike (St. Kates). Kendra Berry (Duluth, MN/East) won the singles draw six championship winning four rounds of matches, while teammate Brooke Volpone (Monticello, MN) was the draw seven singles champion.
The Blugolds will compete again at Winona State on October 7.
