Johnson Earns WIAC Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Maddie Johnson has been selected the recipient of the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award.

A senior from Lakeville, Minn. (South), Johnson owns a 3.57 grade point average and is majoring in biology-pre-med with a minor in pre-professional health science.  She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has appeared on her institution's Dean's List.  Johnson has received Academic Distinction from UW-Eau Claire and earned numerous academic scholarships.

A team captain this year, Johnson helped UW-Eau Claire to a third-place finish at the WIAC championship by placing third at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.  A season ago, she received All-WIAC second team recognition at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.  In 2012, Johnson was a second team honoree at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles.  She earned the team's Coach's Award a season ago and the Blugold Award in 2012.

Johnson is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, UW-Eau Claire's Biology Club, Pre-Professional Health Club, Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Blugold Fellowship.  She is also part of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and is a Student-Athlete Mentor.  Johnson has served as a volunteer for Special Olympics Minnesota and Wisconsin, the American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Community Food Drives, and as a medical volunteer in Nicaragua and Costa Rica.  She was the lead author of journal article based on her research study, which was published in the International Journal of Athletic Medicine, making her the first undergraduate student from Wisconsin or Minnesota to be published in this journal.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman who served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she was Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) from October, 1984 - September, 1996. Kruckman was the women's athletics director at UW-Eau Claire from 1974-84, and one of the original representatives to the WWIAC when it formed in 1971.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, she must be in her last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
