Four Blugolds Earn WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Four UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Receiving honors this week were women's diver Amanda Baker (Fr.-Hudson, Wis.), wrestler Nathaniel Behnke (Fr.-Bruce, Wis.), women's swimmer Lisa Reed (So.-Duluth, Minn./East) and men's hockey player Jordan Singer (Sr.-Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial).

Baker won the three-meter dive and was second in the one-meter event as the Blugolds took second place out of five teams at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational held Jan. 18-19.  She scored 436.40 on the three-meter and 434.15 on the one-meter, both of which were national qualifying marks.

Competing at the Cornell College (Iowa) Matman Invitational on Jan. 19, Behnke won the 141-pound weight class, which featured 23 wrestlers.  Behnke went 5-0 on his way to winning the title to improve to 24-5 on the season.  He started the day with a pin in 2:25 and followed with a 10-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.  He then got to the semifinals after winning with an 8-0 major decision and advanced to the championship match with an 11-1 major decision victory.  In the championship match, Behnke defeated Beau Westpfahl of Coe College (Iowa) 2-0.

Competing in three events at the UW-Stevens Point Invitational held Jan. 18-19, where the Blugolds finished second out of five teams, Reed won once while taking third and fourth in other two events.  She won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:29.20, more than 20 seconds in front of the second-place finisher, while taking third in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Singer helped the Blugolds to two wins during the week as they beat UW-Superior 5-2 on Jan. 18, and 3-1 on Jan. 19.  In the 5-2 victory, he recorded a hat-trick for the third time in his career. He scored the game's first two goals in the opening period to give the Blugolds a 2-0 lead.  He scored his third goal of the night on an empty net with 13 seconds remaining in the contest to put the Blugolds back up by three.  Singer leads the Blugolds this season with 12 goals and 24 points.  He is third on the team with 12 assists.
