Three Blugolds Receive WIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

MADISON, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – Three UW-Eau Claire student-athletes have been selected as Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Athletes of the Week, WIAC Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Matt Stanek announced today.

Named this week were women's diver Amanda Baker (Fr.-Hudson, Wis.), soccer player Tara Dennehy (Fr.-Eugene, Ore./Churchill) and men's hockey goalie Brandon Stephenson (Sr.-Saline, Mich.).

In her collegiate debut on Oct. 19, Baker won both the one and three-meter dives as the Blugolds opened the season at NCAA Division II Minnesota State-Mankato.  She took first in the three-meter with a score of 215.55 after winning the one-meter with a mark of 229.10.  On Oct. 27, Baker took third in both the one and three-meter dives facing UW-Stevens Point and Division II St. Cloud State University (Minn.).  In the one-meter, she scored 236.10, narrowly missing second place while she finished in front of two St. Cloud divers.  In the three-meter, she scored 234.55, finishing less than three points out of first place behind two St. Cloud divers.

Dennehy was instrumental in giving the Blugolds a 2-1 double overtime win against UW-La Crosse on Oct. 27, allowing the Blugolds to finish second in the WIAC.  Down 1-0, Dennehy scored a goal in the 75th minute and then scored the game-winner just 20 seconds before the final horn sounded in the second overtime.

Stephenson helped the Blugolds to two wins over UW-Stout to open the season.  Playing 120 minutes, he stopped 52 shots and gave up just three goals.  In a 4-2 win over the Blue Devils on Oct. 26, Stephenson recorded 30 saves, while giving up two goals in the third period.  On Oct. 27, he stopped 22 shots, giving up just one goal in the first period as the Blugolds went on to win 4-1.
