Blugold Soccer falls short in 2-1 WIAC loss to Warhawks

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) - It was a beautiful October afternoon at Bollinger Fields as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team celebrated Alumni Day and Playing for a Cause: Military Appreciation Day. But despite an early lead, the Blugolds fell to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2-1.

Box Score

The Blugolds wasted no time getting on the board early thanks to defender Hannah Jacobson (So.-Eagan, MN). Sami Matuszak (Jr.-Green Bay, WI) sent in a textbook corner kick that came in eight yards away from the keeper. Jacobson ran in, kept an eye on it, and headed the ball into the left side of the net.

After a physical first half, the score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Blugolds, but they also committed eight fouls compared to UW-Whitewater's three.

In the second half at 53:18, the ball was touched by a Blugold player's hand inside the box, which resulted in a Whitewater penalty kick. The kick was taken by Carly Pottle, but was denied by a diving Sammie Lefaive (Jr.-Coon Rapids, MN).

At 68:44, the Blugolds received a yellow card inside the box leading to yet another penalty kick for the Warhawks. This time the kick was taken by Carina Krausert and was booted into the back of the net just inches out of the reach of Lefaive. The Warhawks would then score the game-winner ten minutes later.

Lefaive finished the day with seven saves which totals for 57 on the season.

The Blugolds will be on the road for their next three games, but will return Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 PM as they host UW-Oshkosh Titans.
