Women's Soccer opens WIAC play with 3-1 win over Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (blugolds.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Saturday, dominating the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers, 3-1.

The Blugolds struck quickly as Brooke Johnson (Fr. – Ashland, WI) scored at 14:23 off an assist from Erin Gietman (So. – Appleton, WI/North). Jocelyn Etten (Sr. – Elkhorn, WI) added another goal 12 minutes later to put the Blugolds up 2-0.

Caroline Henderson (Sr. – Duluth, MN/East) tallied her fifth goal of the season at 35:04 to give the visiting Blugolds a commanding 3-0 lead.

Pioneer Yamilex Jaramillo cut the Blugold lead with a goal at the 58:33 mark but the Eau Claire defense would shut Platteville down for the remainder of the game.

The Blugolds out-shot the Pioneers 11-8 (nine shots on goal) and recorded seven corner kicks to Platteville's one.

Sammie Lefaive (Jr.-Coon Rapids, MN) had three saves on the night in the win.

The Blugolds (4-5-1, 1-0 WIAC) will return to Bollinger Field on Wednesday to host UW-Stevens Point at 4 p.m. Follow the action on Blugold Game Day.
