Soccer Falls in Home Opener

By Kyle Naber, UWEC Sports Information

Eau Claire, Wis. (Blugolds.com)- Returning home for the season opener, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's soccer team looked to add their first win of the season as they took on Bethel University (Minn.) Wednesday afternoon at Bollinger Field.

Box Score | Coach Yengo's recap

The Blugold women took no time in snapping their lengthy goalless streak as they jumped on Royals within the first few minuets of the game courtesy of Sami Matuszak (So. -Green Bay, WI/Preble), last year's goal scoring leader, who added her second goal of the season.

Bethel answered the call at the four-minute mark to tie the game up at one apiece. The score would remain tied for the majority of the first half, where it was Eau Claire who seemed like they would take the advantage. The Blugolds fired six shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net.

As the end of the first half neared and the storm clouds were settling into Bollinger Field, the Royals added the go-ahead goal. Despite the Blugolds best effort they went into halftime trailing 2-1.

In the second half, the Blugolds were clearly rejuvenated by head coach Sean Yengo, who had his team ready to play. Eau Claire had a number of great opportunities to tie up the game as they took 11 shots in the second half, but only three of them were on target. The Blugolds fought until the final buzzer's sound, but were not able to tie up the game.

"It's always nice to score early," said Yengo. "But sometimes it can give you that false sense of security and you think it is just going to be easy the rest of the game."

The Blugolds (0-2-2) they will play at home once again on Saturday September 12, when they take on Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) at 1:00 PM.
